Quinton Rankin: I’m mentally tough, I’ve seen Chad Dawson crumble!

There’s more to Quinton Rankin than what you see on the surface. Peel back the layers and you’ll find Rankin boasts more wisdom and experience than professional boxers with twice as many fights on their resume.

The 32-year-old southpaw from North Carolina is just 16 days away from the biggest fight of his career, an eight-round showdown against former two-time world champion “Bad” Chad Dawson of New Haven, Conn., Saturday, June 29th, 2019 at Foxwoods Resort Casino’s historic Fox Theater, headlining a stacked pro-am card promoted by CES Boxing.

Limited tickets are available at $47, $77 and $157 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com or www.foxwoods.com, by phone at 401-724-2253 or 800-200-2882 or at the Fox Theater Box Office. All fights and fighters subject to change.

The tale of the tape paints a tall order for Rankin (15-5-2, 12 KOs); at the height of his career, Dawson (34-5, 19 KOs) was the king of the light heavyweight division, winning the WBC, IBF and WBO world titles and earning his spot among the all-time greats with convincing wins over Bernard Hopkins, Glen Johnson and Antonio Tarver during an unparalleled seven-year run.

Rankin has never faced anyone as established as Dawson, but he’s bottled up all the knowledge he’s gained from having worked in a number of elite training camps through the years helping champions and challengers in various weight classes prepare for big fights. He recently spent time with former WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto Ramirez in advance of Ramirez’s knockout win over Tommy Karpency in April and has also worked with Thomas Williams Jr., Andre Dirrell and former WBC youth champion John Jackson.

In an ironic twist of fate, Rankin also sparred with pound-for-pound king Andre Ward to help Ward get ready for his own fight against Dawson in 2012. Three or four years ago, Rankin admits he wouldn’t have felt comfortable stepping into the ring against a fighter of Dawson’s pedigree, but now considers himself a much different fighter after working alongside some of the sport’s best, both past and present.

“I’m 100-percent confident I can beat Chad Dawson and will do it in impressive fashion,” Rankin said. “I’ll be able to capitalize on Chad’s flaws. A lot of fighters have seen his flaws and capitalized on them.

“The problem with me is they only have footage from three years ago. I’m a different fighter now. He’ll have a problem adjusting to the new me. Mentally, he isn’t counting on how tough I am. I’ve seen him mentally crushed under pressure.”

This is by far Rankin’s toughest test in eight years as a professional. His most notable win came in April when he upended 11-1 Columbian light heavyweight Neller Obregon by fourth-round knockout. He’s also faced unbeaten New Haven prospect Charles Foster, top-10 world-rated Russian Medzhid Bektemirov and former title-challenger Mike Gavronski. None of those fights, he says, taught him as much as he learned while spending time in Ward’s camp in 2012. At the time, Ward was 28 years old on the brink of keeping his perfect record intact and defending his WBA and WBC super middleweight titles for the fifth time.

“I realized I had a lot of work to do as far as stamina is concerned,” Rankin said. “Skill-wise, I didn’t feel like I was out of my element, but from a conditioning standpoint, Ward is out of this world.

“He doesn’t razzle-dazzle you with speed like Roy Jones. He’s just a workhorse. Once you fade, he’s picking it up, and that’s when you realize, ‘Man, this dude is in shape.’ That’s how he beat [Sergey] Kovalev — his conditioning was better.”

Rankin stepped his game up after working with Ward and also stepped up the level of competition over the next few years, but as a relatively unknown southpaw from North Carolina — historically not a breeding ground for championship-level fighters — he’s still often pigeonholed as just another fringe contender in an exceedingly deep talent pool. He’s had to earn respect the hard way, carrying that underdog mentality into each fight, whether in the ring or in the gym.

“Every time I got into a camp, they say, ‘Damn, you don’t fight like a North Carolina fighter,'” Rankin said. “I’m a future world champion. A lot of people don’t understand that. No one ever protected me. They just throw you to the wolves, but when you throw someone to the wolves, they become a wolf.

“Yeah, I took some losses, but I don’t plan on losing anymore.”

The opportunity to fight Dawson is a dream come true. Rankin admits he’s followed Dawson’s career closely through the years and has even taken elements from his style and implemented them into his own repertoire.

“To get a chance to get in there with him is an honor, but, like I told my brother, ‘I love you, but when you put those gloves on, I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do.’

“It’s not hard for me at all. I always come with respect, but I’m coming to put my gloves on you. We can touch gloves at the beginning and in the end, but in between that I’m trying to hurt you.”

Rankin and his wife have three children — an 11-year-old daughter, and two boys, ages 2 and 10 — and the southpaw works as a boxing trainer at the TITLE Boxing Club on Ayrsley Town Boulevard in Charlotte, which he says keeps him sharp in between fights.

“Teaching someone who isn’t trying to compete gives me a different perspective of intellect. It has actually risen my boxing IQ,” Rankin said. “You have to sometimes break things down for them and verbalize the fundamentals, and if I’m not doing things right I have to correct myself. It keeps me honest.”

Rankin’s bold persona and humble, yet confident, attitude adds a whole new layer of intrigue to the June 29th showcase at Foxwoods. What many have billed as the “homecoming” for Dawson, who hasn’t fought in two and a half years, could be the coming-out party for the underrated Rankin, who is ready for his closeup on boxing’s biggest stage.

“I have nothing to lose,” he said. “If I beat this guy, my whole life changes.”

The co-feature June 29th pits unbeaten New Haven featherweight Tramaine Williams (17-0, 6 KOs) against Filipino challenger Neil John Tabanao (17-5, 11 KOs) in a 10-round bout. Manchester, Conn., super welterweight Jose Rivera (7-4, 5 KOs) battles Luca Podda (7-3, 3 KOs) of Miami in a six-round bout and Oscar Bonilla (5-3-2, 1 KO) of Bridgeport, Conn., faces Julio Perez (4-3) of Worcester, Mass., in a six-round lightweight bout.

Also featured on the main card, New Haven female flyweight Marisa Belenchia (0-0) makes her professional debut against Delaney Owen (0-2) of Clearwater, Fla., and featherweight Nathan Martinez (3-0, 1 KOs) of Bridgeport puts his unbeaten record on the line against Minnesota’s Jose Homar Rios (2-6-1, 1 KO), both in four-round bouts. Junior welterweight Wilson Mascarenhas (1-1) of New Bedford, Mass., faces Joshua Oxendine (0-0) of Pembroke, N.C., and undefeated featherweight Jacob Marrero (3-0, 2 KOs) returns to Foxwoods for the third time in a separate four-round bout.

Showtime for the main card is 7 p.m. ET, preceded by a 10-fight amateur preliminary card featuring Dawson’s son, Chad Dawson Jr., and the debut of Lennox Estrada, the son of U.S. Olympian and former heavyweight title-challenger Jason Estrada of Providence, R.I. The main card streams live on Facebook via FIGHTNIGHT LIVE.

Inoue vs Rodriguez: Jamie McDonnell reflects on fight against Naoya 'Monster' Inoue

Watch Naoya Inoue vs Emmanuel Rodriguez and Josh Taylor vs Ivan Baranchyk from 9pm on Saturday, live on Sky Sports Action.

Jamie McDonnell tells Sky Sports he knew little about Naoya Inoue, but quickly realised why his opponent had been nicknamed 'Monster'.

Despite a stunning highlight reel, Japan's Naoya Inoue is still fighting for widespread appraisal. Surprisingly omitted from discussions focusing on who the world's best boxer is, Inoue, a three-weight world champion, has a chance to remind audiences of his vast talents this Saturday night when he faces outstanding Puerto Rican, Manny Rodriguez, in the World Boxing Super Series semi-finals in Glasgow, live on Sky Sports.

With the Japanese star still something of an unknown entity to the mainstream, one person who does know him well is Jamie McDonnell.

Last spring, the Doncaster man ventured to the Far East for a seemingly impossible task against Inoue. Displaying true world-class credentials following a couple of wins over another Asian star in Tomoki Kameda, McDonnell, a hefty underdog beforehand, was full of belief when beginning his Japanese crusade, but his dream of forcing an upset evaporated in seconds as a combination of weight troubles and Inoue's power destroyed any chance McDonnell had in the opening round.

Heading into the doomed showdown, McDonnell reflects on when he heard he would be facing "The Monster".

"Dave [Coldwell], my manager and trainer, was the one who told me," remembers McDonnell, panting heavily from a late night run as he tunes his body for another crack at world title glory. "He said there was a Japanese guy from the weight below and that I'd be travelling to Japan for the fight. The money was good and everything seemed fine. He told me the guy's name was Inoue, but I don't follow boxing in the slightest so it meant absolutely nothing to me. I was just waiting to get camp going and get over there and defend my world title."

Boasting incredible confidence, but lacking knowledge regarding his profession's landscape, McDonnell was ready to put his crown on the line without knowing the threat that was awaiting him in the 'Land of The Rising Sun'. After being informed of the news, the next person he advised about the imminent battle was his twin brother Gavin, and the studious super-bantamweight, a two-time world challenge, provided his sibling with all he needed to know about Inoue.

"It was our Gavin that told me how good he was. I told him about the fight and he gave me a look that told me it was going to be a hard night. I think he said something along the lines of "He's good him, mate," with this look on his face. After that I had a look at him and you couldn't deny that he had power, but I preferred to focus on my strength because he was coming up in weight and I believe that my engine, size, and experience could take him into the later rounds and slow him down. I knew it'd be a hard night, but I was confident I could take his power."

Armed with hopes of surviving early onslaughts, McDonnell's start was something he couldn't have envisaged in his worst nightmares. Fighting depleted due to an almighty struggle with the scales, McDonnell, faded and feeble, was a shadow of the man who had twice travelled to America and demonstrated to the world that he was one of Britain's best fighters with stunning wins over Kameda. Inoue closed the range immediately and when his hurtful hands found McDonnell's unguarded target with ease, the fight was over before it had even begun.

"He can punch. There's absolutely no doubt about that, but I wanted to see so bad whether his power would stay with him in the middle rounds and when it got late.

"The first shot he hit me with shook me and when you're in a fight feeling as empty as what I did then Inoue is not the ideal opponent. I'll say now that his power is as real as it gets.

"It's like a big thud and it didn't even look like he was loading up when he caught me.

Mykquan Williams Has World Title Goal, Will Not Rush To Belt

Junior welterweight prospect Mykquan Williams may get in some sparring with UFC veteran Matt Bessette at the Manchester Ring of Champions Society (ROCS) gym in Connecticut, but his appearance on UFC Fight Pass tonight doesn’t mean he’s made the leap to mixed martial arts.

It’s still all boxing for the Hartford native, who gets a home game at Foxwoods when he headlines Broadway Boxing against Rickey Edwards. It’s Williams’ first fight as a 21-year-old, but that doesn’t mean he’s done the old man thing of sitting down to reevaluate his life as a legal citizen.

“I know that I’m moving at a decent pace as far as fighting and staying active and busy,” he said. “But as far as the age, I haven’t really sat down and thought about it and taken the age into consideration.”

That’s the beauty of being 21 and seemingly invincible, both in and out of the ring. Yet unlike his peers, Williams isn’t a young man in a hurry. He’s a young man learning his trade and taking his time.

“I have a good team around me, and I take it one fight at a time,” said the 14-0 Williams. “I just turned 21, so time is on my side, basically, and we’re just taking it slowly. There’s no need to rush.”

You don’t hear that too often, especially from talents like Williams, a former amateur standout who just wrapped up his third year as a pro. But having been in the sport for much of his life, he’s seen enough horror stories to know that the quick road isn’t always the best one.

“The reality of it is that you see a lot of young guys trying to take a huge step up quick and that’s a risk,” he said. “No matter how talented you are, it’s still boxing and one punch could turn anything around. So there’s no rush. We all have the same goal – at least everyone should – to become world champion, but I don’t know if some people want to do it quicker than others, if they’re trying to make history, or whatever it is. There’s a lot of things that go with it, but being patient is key because once you get to a certain level, there’s no turning back. You’ve got to accept the fact that you’re there and things will get very tough at that point.”

In other words, you fight the number one contender in your weight class, it’s tough to go back to fighting the usual suspects on the regional scene. That may be more of a mental hurdle than a physical one, so Williams is making sure he’s got both aspects of the sport covered.

“The mental part can be bigger than the physical part,” he said. “The physical part is obviously important; you gotta be in shape to be able to fight and go whatever number of rounds you’re going. But mentally, if you’re not there, no matter how good of shape you’re in, everything is just downhill. You’ve got to be mentally into the fight, you’ve got to know what you want to do, what you want to accomplish in a fight, and you’ve got to listen – it’s a lot.”

So much that Williams put his college studies on hold after two semesters in order to devote himself full-time to his day job. It’s an understandable decision, and frankly, a somewhat necessary one if he wants to grab a world title in the next few years.

“At the time when I started to back off a little bit, I felt that right now wasn’t the right time to juggle the two because I’m so young and I’m busy training a lot throughout the day,” he said. “By the time I get home, I’ve been training or running and who wants to do homework? Who wants to look over a review sheet for a test the following day? It’s difficult.”

And with college on hold, Williams now gets his full-time education in the gym alongside longtime trainer Paul Cichon. This week’s assignment: beat the 12-2 Edwards.

“I don’t typically go on YouTube and look my opponents up,” he said. “I might, once I get a name, search out a clip and watch a minute of a round and then turn it off. I don’t really study. My trainer, Paul Cichon, he does that, though, and he’s good at that. And once we get into the gym, we basically communicate about how the guy fights and what he does. Paul tells me and I just listen. Then sparring wise, he’ll try to get a guy with the same height and same type of style and we’ll go from there.”

It sounds fairly cut and dried, but what happens when the bell rings for real? As Mike Tyson so famously put it, “Everybody has a plan until they get hit.” Yet as Williams puts it, if you put in the work in the gym, that’s not necessarily the case.

“Think about it like this,” he explains. “You’re in math class and they’re teaching you algebra. They’re teaching you that for a certain amount of time, and in boxing, you have to train for a certain amount of time. So when the test comes in algebra, the things that you’ve been studying, you’re gonna see on that test. And when the time comes for me to compete, the things my trainer has been telling me are stuck in my head about the opponent I’m fighting. So it definitely does stay in my head. And there are certain things I look for. The first round or two I might go out there and feel him out just so I can see the openings and how he reacts to feints or certain things like that. So it definitely does stay, and it’s important for it to stay. That’s the whole point of a game plan.”

You can’t say that a 21-year-old with 14 pro fights has it all figured out, but Williams may be getting close. He’s got the talent, the right attitude, and the work ethic. Now it’s just a matter of keeping it all together as the fights add up. Williams is willing to make those sacrifices.

“I have a teacher I’m still very close with,” he said. “He was my math teacher in sixth grade and we communicate damn near every day. We text back and forth and he always tells me to bust my ass now, and then when I’m older, I can hang out, chill, relax and enjoy life. He always says I don’t have an average kid’s life right now. Other kids are probably worrying about parties and are in the classroom and all this other stuff. I’m always training, I’m always in the gym, and I’m always doing something that has to do with my sport and my career. And it will pay off.”

Hurd Vs. Williams, Berchelt Vs. Vargas Odds, Predictions; DAZN Streaming Numbers: Boxing Biz

A week after Canelo Alvarez reestablished his dominance at 160 pounds vs. Daniel Jacobs, the best junior middleweight, two of the best junior lightweights, and two of the best junior featherweights are in action on another interesting weekend of boxing.

Once again, two cards on two different networks will make for a long night of boxing—Fox will showcase Jarrett Hurd vs. Julian Williams (8 p.m. ET), while Miguel Berchelt vs. Francisco Vargas and Emanuel Navarrete vs. Isaac Dogboe are being broadcast on ESPN (10 p.m. ET). But it’s basically imperative to make time to watch all the fights.

Here’s one good reason to take in each bout.

Hurd vs. Williams: The first time Williams (26-1-1, 16 KOs) got his chance at the junior middleweight title, he got knocked out by Jermall Charlo in 2016. He said this time, when he faces Hurd (23-0, 16 KOs), it’ll be a different outcome. But Hurd is the best 154-pounder in the world at the moment, and he’s a significant -700 favorite (Williams is +450). Still, Hurd isn’t taking Williams lightly. ”You can tell a lot about a fighter when you see them in the lead up to a fight,” Hurd said. “Julian Williams looks confident and he looks ready. It's going to be a classic on fight night.”

Berchelt vs. Vargas: Their first fight in 2017 was filled with exciting action before Berchelt (35-1, 31 KOs) simply wore down Vargas (25-1-2, 18 KOs) en route to an 11th-round stoppage. With so many brutal fights on his resume—including back-to-back Fight of the Year winners in 2015 and 2016—there’s a real question whether Vargas is past his prime because he’s taken so much punishment. If that’s the case, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Berchelt—who’s a large -1800 betting favorite (Vargas is a +850 underdog)—stop him even quicker this time. But Vargas’ team said he’s ready to reclaim his 130-pound title. “The first fight between Francisco Vargas and Miguel Berchelt was a war,” Eric Gomez, the president of Golden Boy Promotions, said. “Vargas came up short that night, but it’s been his only loss. Since then, he’s gotten a lot better by training with Joel Diaz, so I’m even more confident now that Vargas will get his belt back.”

Navarrete vs. Dogboe: Navarrete (26-1, 22 KOs) surprised the boxing world last December by winning a well-deserved upset decision vs. Dogboe (20-1, 14 KOs) to take his 122-pound title. At the time, Dogboe was looked at as a potential breakout star. But Navarrete put a quick stop to that. Now, Dogboe wants his title and his redemption. “Look, in my last fight, I wasn’t fit,” said Dogboe, a +180 underdog for the rematch (Navarrete is a -230 favorite). “I underestimated Emanuel Navarrete. But you know something, at my lowest, he couldn’t knock me out. This fight, it’s a guarantee: Isaac Dogboe is here to set the record straight.”

Here are my quick predictions for each fight: 1) Williams might make it a close fight early, but like he usually does, Hurd’s power will come on late and he’ll stop Williams in the back half of the fight; 2) Berchelt will wear down Vargas again—this time, he’ll finish him by the eighth round; 3) Navarrete will once again his use his height and length to control Dogboe and win another close decision.

DAZN proud of its streaming numbers: For the first time I can remember, DAZN released some of its metric numbers this week, and they seemed pretty impressive. According to DAZN, more than 1.2 million people watched last week’s Alvarez-Jacobs match on the streaming service.

“Company officials deemed the event a success, as it generated significant paid subscriptions—both annual and monthly—to deliver against projected revenue targets,” DAZN wrote in an email released to the media. “Despite the heavy influx of viewers and new subscribers, the platform produced a reliable stream with no substantial technical or buffering issues.”

There were multiple media reports that about 600,000 of those streams emanated from the U.S.

It’s unclear exactly how big DAZN’s subscriber base is—those who pay $19.99 per month or $99.99 for an annual subscription. But for now, it seems like the streaming service is pleased with its progress.

Breakdown: Miguel Berchelt vs. Francisco Vargas II fight preview and prediction

Saturday night is a night of choices for fight fans. UFC? Bellator? Jarrett Hurd on Fox? ESPN also has their own offering featuring a pair of very exciting and intriguing rematches. Top Rank on ESPN airs live this Saturday, May 11 with a fight time of 10:00 p.m. ET. Here’s what you can expect from the featured fights.

Miguel Berchelt (35-1; 31 KO) vs. Francisco Vargas (25-1-2; 18 KO)

Super Featherweight (130 lbs.) - 12 rounds

The main event is a rematch from 2017, and it’s quite a rematch indeed. The first time these men met, they turned in a classic fight, one that earned considerable Fight of the Year talk in a year with some very strong candidates. Berchelt took home the win there, using an aggressive and punishing style to earn the 11th round TKO win. The time since has only seen Berchelt’s skills grow. He’s 4-0 since with good wins in there. He’s now the WBC champ and the division’s #1 fighter. His lone loss back in 2014 feels like ancient history. For Vargas, the loss has definitely been damaging. He’s only fought twice since - he has won both, but is now coming in off a year long layoff. The Berchelt fight was the culmination of an absolutely brutal trilogy for Vargas. Wars against Takashi Miura, Orlando Salido, and Berchelt are the kind of fights that earn you massive fan appeal but also take years off your career - for Vargas to have those three back to back to back in a 14 month span is brutal, and it’s no wonder he’s been somewhat quiet since. He’s still ranked #4 in the division, so far from wiped out, but there’s definitely a fear that he could age quickly with another war. Stylistically, this reminds me of the great Alvarado vs. Rios fights from a few years back - two opponents who it almost seems are destined to go to war, even if it takes something serious from both. Berchelt is the rightful favorite here, and I suspect he improves on his performance from last time, but I also suspect Vargas makes it a hell of a ride along the way.
Prediction: Miguel Berchelt, UD

Emanuel Navarrete (26-1; 22 KO) vs. Isaac Dogboe (20-1; 14 KO)

Super Bantamweight (122 lbs.) - 12 rounds

The first fight between these two men came just 5 months ago in December. There, they met in a much anticipated fight on the Lomachenko vs. Pedraza card. Dogboe came in the definite A side - he was the WBO champ, and the prospect many were talking about as a must-watch (myself included). But Navarrete shut that down, refusing to be intimidated by Dogboe’s reputation, and simply outboxing him on his way to a clear decision win. Neither man has fought since. So the question here is simple - is Navarette truly the better fighter, or was he simply the better fighter that night? Did he capitalize on an underprepared Dogboe, or were we too caught up in the hype and too dismissive of Navarette as he made his US debut? This rematch will go a long way towards providing those answers. And for Dogboe in particular, it’s an absolute must-win. Reclaim his belt here, and he’ll be back in the division’s upper echelon and regain his status as a key prospect. Lose, and he’ll find it a very long road indeed to regain that form. Dogboe says he underestimated Navarrete last time out, and I tend to believe him. But I am well aware I may end up with egg on my face again.

Prediction: Isaac Dogboe, UD

How to watch ‘Canelo Alvarez vs. Daniel Jacobs’ live stream online tonight via DAZN

One of the best boxing matches of the year will unfold later tonight (Sat., May 4, 2019) live on DAZN from inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, as WBC and WBA middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (51-1-2, 35 KOs) locks horns with IBF middleweight king Daniel Jacobs (35-2, 29 KOs) in a main event title unification bout.

This is a huge middleweight meeting to say the least. Canelo, who inked a monster deal with DAZN late last year, is coming off a vicious TKO finish over Rocky Fielding in his DAZN debut this past December and will look to win another major middleweight title later tonight in Sin City.

Jacobs, on the other hand, is coming off a decision win over Serhiy Derevianchenko last October to claim the IBF middleweight strap and will try to lock down his biggest career victory with an upset of Canelo. Remember, Jacobs came up short against pound-for-pound standout Gennady Golovkin back in 2017 in what remains “Miracle Man’s” lone loss since 2010.

Be sure to catch all the action later tonight as Canelo makes his return to the ring in his second appearance on DAZN. Check out below for all the ways to view the “Canelo vs. Jacobs” fight card in its entirety:

(92.9 The Game) It's Cinco de Mayo weekend, and that means boxing.

Sean Thompson and Craig Carlos-Valentino, hosts of "Championship Rounds," look ahead to Saturday night's fight between superstar champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Daniel Jacobs for the undisputed middleweight championship at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The 28-year-old Alvarez (51-1-2, 35 KOs) is the WBA and WBC middleweight champion; Jacobs (35-2, 29 KOs), 32, currently owns the IBF title. On paper, this seems like a great fight (Alvarez is listed by Bovada as a -500 favorite; Jacobs is a +350 underdog). Can it live up to the hype?

"The last thing Jacobs is for Canelo is a just another opponent. He is a legit champion and a legit fighter who will bring the fight to Canelo," Thompson said. "(Jacobs) beat cancer and stood toe to toe with GGG. He's not in fear of anything about Canelo at all. I expect a great fight and performance from both fighters."

Both hosts predict it will be a winning Cinco de Mayo weekend for Alvarez, the Mexican phenom. Carlos-Valentino thinks it will be pretty comfortable.

"I can see 116-112 for Canelo," he said. "I don't think Jacobs will be able to do enough to handle Canelo's constant pressure. I think he wears Jacobs down with strong body shots"

Thompson can see the judges making it a little more interesting.

"We are talking about Canelo, who seems to always be at the center of a crazy scorecard or two," Thompson said. "So if I see an even scorecard or 120-108 card, I would not be surprised. I've almost come to expect a crazy scorecard that doesn't best represent the actual action in a Canelo fight. But regardless still think Canelo ends up with the decision."

Unlike the typical pay-per-view platform, Saturday night's fight will be broadcast by DAZN (pronounced "Da Zone"), a subscription streaming service dedicated to sports that costs $99.99 for the year. Carlos-Valentino thinks DAZN is the future of how we consume boxing.

"This is the direction that things have been going for a while," he said. "This is how people have been consuming sports: on their smartphones and computers."

The guys also looked back at last month's Terrence Crawford-Amir Khan fight. Crawford won via sixth-round TKO when Khan was not able to continue following an accidental low blow.

"Now that we've moved on from that fight, can we get to the fight everyone wants to see, which is Crawford and (Errol) Spence?" Thompson asked. "There are two fights that have to be made I think in the next 18 months, and that is Wilder and Joshua and Crawford and Spence. Anything later than that, you really are losing these guys fighting in their actual primes, which would be bad for boxing."
