Shawn Porter Vs. Yordenis Ugas Odds, Preview; Deontay Wilder: Boxing Biz

If you took a look simply at the boxing matchup that will air on Fox on Saturday, you could be forgiven for thinking that the Shawn Porter vs. Yordenis Ugas fight is yet another mismatch on primetime TV. Porter, after all, is an established welterweight star, who’s defending his title for the first time since beating another elite opponent in Danny Garcia. Ugas, meanwhile, isn’t nearly as well known, and hasn’t won against an opponent that’s even close to Porter’s level.

But consider the betting odds. In the other two recent mismatches (on paper, at least) on Fox, Keith Thurman was an enormous -10000 favorite vs. Josesito Lopez and Leo Santa Cruz matched those odds and was -10000 vs. Rafael Rivera. Porter isn’t seen as nearly as sure of a thing in the eyes of the oddsmakers.

As of Friday, Porter was a -335 favorite, meaning you’d have to bet $335 to win $100. A few weeks ago, Porter was a -400 favorite. That means more of the money has been coming in on Ugas to pull off the upset. But can he? There are plenty of reasons to watch Porter vs. Ugas. Here are three of them.

1) Porter knows Ugas can be dangerous: Porter (29-2, 17 KOs) is under no illusion that his matchup vs. Ugas will be an easy victory. Ugas doesn’t have any elite victories. But he has a handful of good wins, and Porter isn’t planning to take him for granted. “Every fight is a must win fight and for anyone that doesn't realize that, it starts when you turn professional,” Porter said. “You do the best you can to put yourself in line to win every fight, to climb the ladder and get to the point where I'm at right now. I didn't do all that and look at all those fights like they were must win fights and then get here now and look at this fight like it's any different. This fight is just like my very first fight. It's just like my second, my third and my last fight. This is a must win fight and it's definitely a dangerous fight, but they are always going to be dangerous when you get in the ring with the high level caliber fighters that I fight.”

2) Ugas has pulled off upsets before: After losing back-to-back fights to undefeated prospects in 2014, Ugas (23-3, 11 KOs) took the next 27 months off. Then, he beat the undefeated Jamal James and the undefeated Bryant Perrella. Since then, he’s reeled off six-straight victories, including a nice win vs. Thomas Dulorme. Porter is much better than any of those opponents. But Ugas has career momentum and plenty of confidence. “I am an aggressive fighter and I'm going utilize that style on Saturday. Shawn is a little bit more difficult when he moves around in the ring. His boxing ability is underrated. But I'm prepared to do what I have to so that I can become champion.” Ugas also said, “I am 100 percent better technically than Shawn Porter.”

3) A victory here could set Porter up with a big-money fight: The 147-pound welterweight division is a deep one that could be filled with big-money purses. Porter made $1 million to fight Garcia last September, and reportedly, he'll make $1.25 million on Saturday (compared to Ugas' $300,000 purse). If Porter could compel Keith Thurman to give him a rematch or if he could get a high-profile fight vs. Errol Spence, he’d probably make even more. "Keith Thurman, Errol Spence Jr. or Manny Pacquiao,” Porter said. “Those are all big fights that people want to see. If this fight goes the way we want it to go, those guys are the goal for the next fight.”

Deontay Wilder’s next fight: According to the Ring, Deontay Wilder’s next fight vs. Dominic Breazeale is being marked for May 16 on PPV. That’s because, according to Mike Coppinger, Top Rank offered Wilder $12.5 million for the fight. Since Premier Boxing Champions wasn’t going to let Wilder escape to a different promoter, the PBC had to give him an eight-figure payday.

In his last fight, Wilder made a $4 million guarantee vs. Tyson Fury but was estimated to make $10 million more than that.

WBC welterweight champion Shawn Porter (29-2-1, 17 KOs) weighed in a whooping 148.8 pounds on his first weigh-in attempt for his maiden title defense against Yorgenis Ugas (23-3, 11 KOs) at Friday’s weigh-in for their fight this Saturday night on Premier Boxing Champions on FOX & FOX Deportes at the Dignity Health Sports Park, in Carson, California.

Porter was able to go back to his dressing room and take off the 1.8 lbs that he was over the limit by, and return to weigh-in successfully at 146 1/2 lbs.

Porter’s opponent, Ugas, 32, weighed in at 146.5 lbs. During the face off, the 5’9″ Ugas towered over the 5’7″ Porter. The size advantage for Ugas looks pretty significant. That in itself probably won’t be enough for Yordenis to get the win, but if Porter is weakened from having dropped the extra weight at the last second tonight, there’s a possibility we could see an upset brewing on Saturday night.

No one knows how good of a talent Ugas is. Although he lost a several fights earlier in his career, he’s been unbeaten in the last five years since 2014. Ugas has an eight fight winning streak going for him since losing to Amir Imam and Emanuel Robles in back to back fights in 2014. Those fights took place at 140, and that weight class was all wrong for the tall 5’9″ Ugas. He looked like a bean pole when he fighting at light welterweight. Since moving up to 147, Ugas has been unbeaten and he’s looked good. However, Ugas hasn’t fought a pressure fighter like Porter during his winning streak, so you can’t say for sure whether he’s going to be able to hold up under fire on Saturday.

This is the first fight for Porter since winning the vacant World Boxing Council 147 lb title last September in beating Danny “Swift” Garcia by a 12 round unanimous decision. Porter says he plans on beating the former Cuban amateur star Ugas on Saturday night, and then he wants the winner of the March 16 fight between IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. and Mikey Garcia.

Porter says he’s going to enter the ring after the Spence-Garcia fight, and challenge the winner to a fight. It worked for Porter before when he entered the ring to challenge Danny Garcia after his knockout win over Brandon Rios, so now he wants to try the same trick by entering the ring after the Spence-Garcia fight. Spence would be willing to fight Porter after Garcia, but only if he can’t arrange a bigger fight against Manny Pacquiao or Keith Thurman. Spence isn’t going to commit to a fight with Porter without knowing if Pacquiao or Thurman will take the fight with him. There’s also the possibility of a rematch with Mikey if their fight is an entertaining one and brings in a lot of PPV buys on Fox Sports
